‘Fraudster’ caught 17 years later
A fugitive involved in a business fraud 17 years ago involving millions of yuan has been arrested, Shanghai police said yesterday.
He was trying to get his new company listed on the stock exchange at the time of his arrest.
The suspect, surnamed Gao, signed a 2.5 million yuan (US$363,000) contract in 2000 for 500 tons of goods with a textile company but fled with the money together with his business partner after delivering only 200 tons, police said.
Gao’s partner, surnamed Zhang, was arrested soon after, but Gao disappeared. Police in Jinshan District handled the case because Gao and Zhang’s company was registered in the district.
Police said they found at the beginning of this year that Gao was now living with a new name — “Li Jian” — and finally tracked him down at a railway station in Changsha City, Hunan Province, on April 12.
Police said Gao had told them he had cut off all contact with family and friends after Zhang’s arrest and fled to Hainan and then Guangdong, where he started new businesses, one of which is now seeking a share listing.
