Female tourist missing after jumping into high seas from cruise ship
A female tourist onboard a cruise ship from Shanghai and heading to Japan and South Korea was believed to have jumped into sea on Saturday night and remains missing , the cruise ship operator said.
The ship had left from Shanghai International Cruise Terminal in Baoshan District.
The woman was confirmed missing at 9:15pm yesterday, and surveillance camera showed she jumped into sea from the public area on the 15th deck of the Sapphire Princess on 10:28pm on Saturday, Princess Cruises China said in a statement.
The ship was in the high seas when the woman fell into water. She was last seen at 7pm on Saturday.
The ship returned in search of the woman, and then continued with its voyage after the rescue attempt failed.
Nagasaki and Cheju are the two stops on the five-day trip. The ship is scheduled to return to Shanghai tomorrow.
The rescue efforts and investigation are both underway, Shanghai maritime authorities said.
Last month, a Shanghai tourist was rescued from the sea by a fishing boat 38 hours after she was reported missing from a cruise ship that was returning from Japan to Shanghai. The 31-year-old woman, who was traveling from Fukuoka to Shanghai with her parents, was reported missing from the Mariner of the Seas at around 9pm on August 10. She was picked up by the vessel at around noon on August 12. She alleged she managed to stay awake and remain afloat without anything to hang onto, and had to swim away from big ships to avoid their propeller blades.
