Expo site to be downtown park

SHANGHAI will make use of the Expo area in Pudong to build its largest downtown park.
It will include a theater and a world-class conservatory garden, according to a primary plan unveiled by Shanghai Planning and Land Resource Administration. The riverside park, temporarily named Expo Culture Park, will occupy nearly 190 hectares.
The former Italian, French, Russian and Luxemburg pavilions will be kept as memories of the 2010 World Expo. Public greeneries in the park, totaling 150 hectares, will contribute to the building of the city’s ecological environment.
The park, sited by Lupu Bridge, can be reached by Metro Line 13’s Shibo Avenue Station and Line 7’s Houtan Station.
The existing Xueyue No. 2, Shanggang and Tangzijing roads will be removed and adjustments will be made to other roads around the area.
According to the plan, the new theater will take up a space of 79,300 square meters, while the conservatory garden will occupy up to 30,000 square meters.
Citizens are encouraged to offer suggestions to the plan by e-mailing xiangguichu@163.com before May 31.
According to a survey conducted by Shanghai Greening and City Appearance Bureau of 19,000 citizens, 75 percent wanted to see activities to improve plant knowledge organized in the park. Others called for more local species of plants.
