Excellent air quality forecast for next 2 days

EXCELLENT to good air quality is forecast for today and tomorrow with winds dispersing pollutants.

However, it will remain chilly with rain and even snow over the next five days, said forecasters.

Last night, according to the city Air Quality Index, air quality had improved to good, having earlier been medium polluted, the Shanghai Center for Environmental Monitoring said yesterday.

Readings of tiny PM2.5 particles, especially harmful as they can get deep into the respiratory system reached a peak of 120 micrograms per cubic meter at 2pm yesterday — almost 5 times of the World Health Organization safety level.

Levels dropped in the afternoon to 53 micrograms per cubic meter at 5pm.

While the city is set for better air quality for the next two days, the arrival of a cold front from the north on Sunday will worsen air quality, said officials.

Light pollution is then forecast in Shanghai through Tuesday.

Temperatures today will range between 3 and 6 degrees Celsius, with rain or even some snow possible, said the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.
