Driver held over fatal hit-and-run
A MAN was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of being involved in a hit-and-run incident in downtown Jing’an District that left a cyclist dead, police said yesterday.
The suspect was one of five people inside the car at the time of the accident, but the only one who fled the scene after the crash, police said.
One of the four passengers was the owner of the vehicle who initially told police that the man who fled was not a friend, but a hired driver. He and two other passengers were later detained for trying to pervert the course of justice after it transpired the driver was known to them.
The incident happened on Friday night on Nanjing Road W., close to the junction with Shimen No. 1 Road, police said.
The car was traveling on the wrong side of the road when it ran into a tricycle coming in the opposite direction. The cyclist was taken to hospital but died from his injuries later the same day, they said.
