Designer wanted for silo revamp

SHANGHAI’S top planning body is inviting designers from around the world to help turn an old grain silo on the Pudong side of the Huangpu River into a major exhibition space.

The 50-meter-tall silo, built by a British shipping company in the early part of the last century, was once the largest in Asia and stored most of the city’s grain in its heyday.

The 80,000-ton silo will be part of a complex serving as the venue for Shanghai Urban Space Art Season, which will open in late September or early October in 2017, the city’s planning, land and resources administration said.

Exhibitions will focus on global urban planning practices and public space development.

The surrounding area, including the Minsheng Wharf near Minsheng Road, will be included in the project, the administration said.

“Combined with the transformation and upgrading of the wharf, the exhibition project will help develop the area into a new cultural hotspot,” an administration official said yesterday.

After the facility opens, many public events will be held, such as the Lujiazui Public Art Festival, Citizen Tourism Festival, Citizen Cultural Festival, and the annual World City Day in late October.

The British shipping company Blue Funnel Line purchased the wharf during the reign of Emperor Guangxu (1875-1908) of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) .

It built the silo and warehouses between 1907 and 1925, making the wharf the most advanced facility of its kind in the Far East.

The wharf area will become a commercial and cultural zone, featuring art exhibitions, hotels and other facilities in both historic and newly built structures.
