Deli owner jailed for selling unsafe food

AN unlicensed delicatessen owner has been jailed for a year for making and selling tainted food, Baoshan District prosecutors said yesterday.
Xu Jianguo opened a store without a license in a local market in November, 2015, prosecutors said, selling cooked chicken feet, duck gizzard and pig ear.
In a routine check last year, the market watchdog seized samples that then tested high for levels of formaldehyde, a carcinogen.
Tests found traces of 250 milligrams per kilogram in pig ear and duck gizzard. Formaldehyde also occurs naturally.
The World Health Organization recommends a daily maximum of 50 milligram per kilogram.
Xu said he had added caustic soda to the animal parts to make them look prettier and taste better. He said they might have been laced with formaldehyde when he bought from the wholesaler.
Tests showed caustic soda from his store was safe. As the wholesaler couldn’t be found, it remains unknown where formaldehyde came from. Therefore, he was convicted making and selling unsafe food.
