Club mixed drugs cocktails for revelers

NIGHTCLUB owners and a member of staff who mixed cocktails of drugs and served them to clubbers have been jailed, the Jing’an District People’s Court announced yesterday.

The Jing’an District club, the name of which was not given, had been offering clubbers “Happy Water” — a cocktail of ketamine, amphetamine and other drugs heated with a soft drink to produce a white liquid, the court heard.

Customers provided the drugs that were used to make the drinks.

When police raided in March, they caught more than 50 people taking drugs in six private rooms, while a member of waiting staff was preparing drug drinks for customers.

Some 200 grams of ketamine, amphetamine and methamphetamine drugs were found in the private rooms and club offices.

The co-owner and manager, surnamed Chen, was sentenced to a year in jail, while co-owners surnamed Wang and Feng received eight-month sentences.

The member of waiting staff caught preparing drugs cocktails, surnamed Wu, received five months in detention.

The four were each fined 2,000 yuan (US$322).

All had confessed to police.

The club owners failed to stop drug use and earned money by providing shelter for drug use, the court said.

Under Chinese law, anyone who provides a venue for drug taking faces a prison term of up to three years, detention or public surveillance with fines.

The court heard that the three owners and another investor bought the club in late 2013, opening it as women-only, with male models serving them.

But business struggled and they began admitting men.

When they discovered people taking drugs in private rooms in August 2014, they saw a money-making opportunity, Chen told the court.

They charged drug users 10,000 yuan to hire a private room, while waiting staff cost 2,000 yuan.

They had begun making profits before the raid, Chen said.
