City landmarks to be redeveloped

SHANGHAI’S top planning body is seeking urban design ideas as authorities look to beautify downtown landmarks.

The Shanghai Planning, Land and Resources Administration launched a global campaign entitled “2016 Shanghai Urban Design Challenge” over the weekend, inviting both professional designers and amateurs to redevelop Xujiahui and Hengshan-Fuxing roads in Xuhui District, the banks of Suzhou Creek and the Zhangjiang Hi-tech Park in Pudong New Area.

The administration will publish basic information related to the area like geology, land usage, constructions, traffic information and population.

The Shanghai Stadium and Shanghai Gymnasium along with nearby natatorium and other sports facilities will be redeveloped into Xujiahui Sports Park, said the head of the planning department, a person surnamed Jiang.

“The idea is to improve the environment of the area and meet the needs of sport-related activities for residents,” she said.

The Hengshan-Fuxing Road Historic Reservation Area project will have a pedestrian passage along the city’s historic villas and former residence of celebrities.

The Suzhou Creek project will revamp the riverside areas and establish a sightseeing path along the creek.

The Northwest Zhangjiang Hi-tech Park project aims to build a Technological Business Community for innovative professionals to work, study and live, the administration added.

Participants will be classified into professional and public groups. Three winners will be picked from each of the groups by a panel consisting of government officials and senior urban planners. “The city government will include the winning designs into its final blueprints on the four projects,” said Jiang.

It is the first time that the city’s planning authority is soliciting ideas from professionals and the general public.

Participants can take part in multiple projects. Detailed information is available on the bilingual website sudc.qxqy.sh.cn. A preliminary contest is planned for August 15.

The first round of winners will be picked by August 20 who will then work on the final project. The winners will be announced in October.
