Chemical firm owner jailed for making meth
A man who produced drugs and taught overseas clients the tricks of the trade was sentenced to 14 years in jail and fined 500,000 yuan (US$75,585) by the Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People’s Court. His two accomplices were jailed for three years.
“This case was part of a multinational crackdown on cross-border drug crimes,” said Wang Qiuliang, vice president of the Shanghai Higher People’s Court. “It has also helped to improve our ability to handle cross-border drug-related cases.”
According to the court, Zhang Lei, who operated a medical science and technology company in Shanghai, employed people to make drugs — ecstasy and methamphetamine — using chemicals produced by his company between 2011 and 2013.
To persuade overseas customers to buy the chemicals at high prices, Zhang told his two employees to teach them how to make methamphetamine.
In August 2012, one of the two employees went to the UK to help a customer, but his activities attracted the attention of the British police.
Zhang and the accomplice were apprehended by Shanghai police on November 7, 2013. Nearly 80 grams of drugs were seized.
The other accomplice later surrendered himself to local police.
According to officials, 70 percent of drug cases last year involved methamphetamine.
