Center central to green shipping

A technical center to promote green shipping and looking at how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from Asian shipping sectors was established at Shanghai Maritime University yesterday.

The Maritime Technical Cooperation Center for Asia is one of five regional technical centers under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization.

The role of the centers is to improve shipping energy-efficiency technologies and operations, and to reduce harmful emissions from ships. The project is funded by the European Union.

Greenhouse gas emission from ships is a major source of air pollution.

Shanghai’s shipping sector produces an estimated 5.6 percent of the city’s total emissions of PM2.5, tinyparticles in the air that are hazardous to health.

The city, which is aiming to become an international shipping center by 2020, has launched a series of policies to promote green shipping.

“The establishment of the center will bring new opportunities and momentum for China to develop a green and sustainable shipping industry and for Shanghai to build up a global shipping center,” said He Jianzhong, deputy minister of the Ministry of Transport.

The center would also play a key role to serve the construction of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road and promote maritime development in countries along the silk road, He added.

The center will promote technology transfer, training and educational programs by taking advantage of the maritime university’s training resources and development capacity.

The five regional centers are established in five regions — Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America and the Pacific — to form a global network. The selections followed a competitive tendering process.
