Caterers set to raise their game

SHANGHAI Food and Drug Administration will work with the city’s labor union to improve food safety by setting up a registration and management system for online catering firms.

Authorities would enhance training for the companies’ couriers, said a FDA official, who pointed out they had been scolded for being unprofessional, rude, and lacking good hygiene habits.

The FDA had asked two popular online catering service platforms, Meituan and Ele.me, to develop apps to collate consumers’ comments on unsatisfactory restaurants and report to the FDA and market watchdog, said Zhang Zhunmin, deputy director of Shanghai FDA.

FDA officials had visited online catering service providers several times since 2015, guiding them to establish strict food safety management systems.

The FDA had inspected more than 43,000 restaurants registered on websites and taken 1,400 samples of their food deliveries.

More than 60,000 unlicensed restaurants had been closed and removed from online catering websites.
