Cabbie dragged drunk man for 100 meters
A TAXI driver has been given a three-year suspended prison sentence for dragging a man for 100 meters behind his cab, leaving him with brain injuries.
The cabbie, surnamed Wu, was found guilty of intentional injury, Yangpu District People’s Court said yesterday.
After having dinner with friends on January 12, the victim, surnamed Song, had knocked at the window of Wu’s cab which was pulled over on Fushun Road, the court heard.
But Wu believed that Song had been drinking alcohol and could be trouble, so refused him, claiming that he was off duty.
The court heard that Song was annoyed by Wu’s refusal and grabbed the car door to stop Wu from driving off.
Wu accelerated to get rid of him, but Song fell to the ground and was dragged for 100 meters.
After Wu left the scene, Song was sent to the hospital and diagnosed with a brain injury.
Police identified Wu with the help of surveillance videos.
He admitted his guilt and offered to pay Song compensation of more than 260,000 yuan (US$42,380).
As the two sides came to an understanding, the court decided to suspend the three-year sentence.
