Buses canceled, water pipes burst as cold wave lashes city

TWO water pipes burst and dozens of long-distance buses were canceled as a wet cold chill hit the city yesterday.

Locals woke up to rains in some parts of the city and sleet on the outskirts but the temperatures of 1 and 2 degrees Celsius yesterday morning was not low enough for the ice to hold on the ground.

The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said the cold wave brought rains in downtown and short-lived snowfalls in the west and northern parts of the city yesterday.

The districts that recorded sleets included Qingpu, Songjiang, Jiading, Baoshan, Jinshan, along with Chongming County.

Weather forecasters said the coming days will be the coldest winter in 35 years with the temperature in Shanghai set to drop to -7 in urban areas and -10 in the suburban areas on Sunday.

The bureau said though the skies will clear up tomorrow, it will be much colder with the mercury falling below zero with stronger winds bringing a wind chill. It will warm up a bit on Tuesday with a low of minus 4 and a high of 4 degrees.

The Shanghai Long-Distance Bus Terminal canceled 45 buses to southern Anhui and Jiangsu provinces and to Hangzhou in Zhejiang Province, which battled heavy snowfall yesterday.

With crowds already leaving for the Spring Festival holiday, the cancelation of the buses left quite a few dejected.

“I have no choice but to go back to school and wait,” said a student who was close to tears. “I’ll come back tomorrow to check again.”

The buses were canceled after the highways were closed due to icy roads.

Shanghai South Long-Distance Bus Station also suspended 25 buses.

In Chongming County, the main water pipe burst at around 5am which affected around 6,000 families. The rupture was blamed on the cold weather. The county government arranged vehicles to deliver water to some 6,000 households in Chengqiao Town. It has since been repaired and water supplies have resumed.
