Building subsidence within limits, government says

THE government said the leaning and subsidence of two buildings in Chuansha Town was within construction standards even though residents are worried they are in danger.

The Pudong New Area Construction and Transport Commission unveiled results of the inspection early this morning on its Weibo account.

It said the subsidence of the two blocks, which share the same foundations, is 87.65 millimeters, less than the limit of 200mm. The rate of inclination was 0.68‰, less than the limit of 4‰.

Building No. 17 has "bumped" into the eaves of Building No. 18 at the complex on Huaxia Road W. due to the subsidence.

The commission's statement said the buildings were built too close together. It added a change in temperature caused construction materials to stretch, which eventually led to the buildings touching one another.

The commission said the main structure of the buildings would not be affected by the subsidence. Shanghai Gas Company inspected the gas lines in both buildings to ensure there was no safety risk.

The commission said its construction management department has organized a group of experts to monitor the situation, and would take appropriate action if necessary.

The 150 households in the two blocks in Xinyuan West Community were relocated from elsewhere in Chuansha Town in 2012. They noticed the two buildings were touching one another on Saturday. Some said they were afraid to live in the two 15-story blocks before the local government sent the inspection teams.
