Boy on bike killed in collision

A boy, thought to be about 10 years old, died after being in collision with a coach while riding an ofo rental bike in the city’s downtown on Sunday afternoon, police said.

The coach hit the boy while taking a left turn from Tiantong Road to Zhejiang Road N., according to Jing’an District police.

Several police officers and firefighters helped to pull him from under the bus, but he was later confirmed to be dead after being taken to hospital.

Police said the cause of the accident had yet to be determined.

Ofo, the rental bike operator, said it had sent its condolences to the boy’s parents. Ou Jing, ofo’s manager in Shanghai, said it was not known how the child had managed to obtain the bike, as the service registration required personal identity information and blocked users aged under 12.

China’s traffic regulations bar children under 12 from riding on roads.
