Artificial eye help for rural boy

A 14-YEAR-OLD boy from a rural area in southwest China’s Guizhou Province who lost the sight in his left eye in an accident, was fitted with an artificial eye yesterday, thanks to the generosity of a Shanghai woman.

Deng Guangwei told Shanghai Daily that he is pleased to have been fitted with his artificial eye.

“I think I look a lot better now,” said Deng.

A local office worker, surnamed Fan, paid for Deng’s surgery and treatment at the Eye Nose and Throat Hospital of Fudan University, plus travel expenses of the boy and his father.

Fan, who declined to reveal how much money she contributed, praised those involved in getting the artificial eye, created by Minrui Eyes, for Deng.

“It’s wonderful to know that there are so many kind-hearted people who are ready to help those in need,” said Fan.

Deng lost the sight in his eye following an injury caused by a branch five years ago.

This was left untreated as his family couldn’t afford the medical expenses.

Fan said she first met Deng when she visited his school in the Weining Yi Hui and Miao Autonomous County, in 2013. She had been providing funds for children there.
