Another chopper firm takes flight in city

ANOTHER aviation company is taking to the skies by offering sightseeing chopper rides over the Pudong New Area.

Kingwing General Aviation Co said yesterday it will offer three flights over the World Expo 2010 site, the Huangpu River bank and the Shanghai Disney Resort from Friday.

The ride over the Expo site costs 4,000 yuan (US$640), Huangpu River 8,000 yuan and Disney a whopping 12,000 yuan with flight duration lasting from six minutes to 25 minutes. The chopper can take five passengers, who can split the costs, thus making it affordable, Kingwing’s general manager Liu Zhiqiang said.

The new service will be operated from the Zhengyang Helipad in the Pudong New Area. The airspace over Puxi is still restricted to helicopters.

The East China Civil Aviation Administration of China inspected the helipad and assessed the company’s capabilities, a company official who did not want to be identified, told Shanghai Daily yesterday.

The company has been given a short license to fly until July 31 when it has to apply to the administration again.

Last month, Shanghai KaiJet General Aviation became the first company to get the nod to offer chopper rides in the city.

Some passengers complained that the price was too high for such a short ride. But Liu said even with the current prices it was struggling to make the ends meet.

A similar helicopter ride over New York costs US$150 for 15 minutes. Tokyo charges US$240, while the most popular chopper ride over the Colorado Grand Canyon costs US$300, making Shanghai’s chopper ride the most expensive trip.
