Agriculture future is to be eco-friendly

SHANGHAI aims to get more than 70 percent of locally produced agricultural products to be organic and pollution-free, officials said.
The details of building up eco-friendly agriculture, ensuring the good quality and safety of products, are contained in the 13th Five-Year (2016-2020) Plan on Shanghai’s agriculture development issued yesterday.
The city will drop the use of chemical fertilizer and find more effective ways to recycle straw, both big pollution sources in agriculture, the plan said.
Yin Ou, vice director of the city’s agricultural commission, said the target was set at 70 percent rather than 100 percent as the authority had taken “the certification application” into account.
“Pollution-free is our bottom line, which all agricultural products produced in Shanghai will be required to meet,” Yin said. “However, many farmers are not fully aware of or have enough incentives to apply for the green and organic food certifications.”
Yin said the application procedure was open to agricultural companies, cooperatives or family farms, and was made on a voluntary basis.
“We will encourage more applicable subjects to apply for the certification so as to get more certified products on to the market,” he said.
The city will also improve the environment in countryside by tighten regulations on poultry farms close to hundreds of polluted rivers.
The city will also promote the commercialization and application of agricultural technology, and introduce Internet-based services into agricultural development.
