A virtual city tour of the Party’s iconic sites

EXPLORING the Communist Party of China’s rich and colorful history in Shanghai has become much easier with the launch yesterday of an electronic map that takes users on a virtual tour of the city’s sites of revolutionary significance.

The map, which was launched by the Urban Culture Research Institute of the Shanghai Normal University and the Humanism Memorial Museum of Fushouyuan Cemetery to mark the 95th anniversary of the founding of the Party on July 1, takes people along three separate routes.

The late Chen Duxiu, one of the founders of the Communist Party of China, takes people to Lane 119 Taicang Road, where he founded the journal “Youth,” in 1915 which later became “New Youth,” and Lane 100 Nanchang Road, where he met the revolutionary leaders Mao Zedong and Yu Xiusong in 1920 to discuss the founding of the Party.

Famous Chinese scholar and educator Chen Wangdao leads people to Lane 163 Zizhong Road, where he translated the Communist Manifesto by Friedrich Engels and Karl Marx into Chinese in 1920, and to a school for girls on Chengdu Rd N. where he taught Chinese in 1922.

There are so far 21 sites on the map, including Yuyangli, a former residential complex in downtown’s Huaihai Road where the Chinese Communist Youth League was founded, and the former residence of revolutionary icon Dr Sun Yat-sen on Xiangshan Road. More routes and the contribution of foreigners in the development of the Party will be included in future.

To mark the anniversary, a forum was held yesterday to discuss the contributions foreigners made to the development of the Party.

Those in attendance heard about New Zealand-born writer Rewi Alley, who came to Shanghai in 1927 and was later involved in China’s revolution and reconstruction, and Grigori Voitinsky, who took played a role in the founding of the Party.

The map can be viewed at http://wap.i-h5.cn/lys_game/renwenxingzou/index.html. WeChat and app versions are expected in future.

Its content will be expanded gradually and a bilingual version is in the pipeline.

Those who are interested in the history of the Party will be able to go on physical tours following in the footsteps of revolutionary figures, from next month, including the spots on the map.
