31 people held for selling fake ‘bank’ gifts to public

A TOTAL of 31 people were detained for fraud in July after posing as bank workers and selling overpriced goods to gullible members of the public, Qingpu District police said yesterday.

The scam was initiated by a woman named Lili, who hired 10 people to work as telephone salespeople from a small call center she set up in a rented apartment.

The group contacted customers and sold them gift packages comprising fake phone cards, low quality 3D glasses and TV set-top boxes. They sold for between 99 (US$16) and 399 yuan, police said.

They did not say how much they were actually worth.

After the success of the first scam, two of Lili’s workers started their own operations.

According to police, the three groups sold 200 gift packs a day and netted more than 1.2 million yuan in profits.

Police were alerted to the groups’ activities by a tip-off from a member of the public. The investigation is ongoing.
