3 relatives jailed over hospital row

THREE female relations of a baby girl who died just three days after her birth have been sentenced to prison terms for running amok in a hospital after being refused compensation, the Jing’an District People’s Court said yesterday.

The infant was born on May 2 with multiple organ failure and a degenerative brain disease. Doctors at the hospital, which was not named, recommended she be transferred to a children’s facility, but her family refused and the infant passed away three days later.

On May 8, several members of her family returned to the hospital to demand compensation. A fracas ensued, during which tables and chairs were broken, and windows were smashed, the court heard.

Police were called and three people deemed to be the ringleaders — later identified as the child’s grandmother, great aunt and aunt — were detained.

The women were found guilty of causing criminal damage and assaulting a police officer. They were each jailed for between two and three months.
