‘200,000 shortfall in number of domestic staff’
SHANGHAI has a shortfall of nearly 200,000 ayi, according to the Cloud Housekeeping booking platform for household services.
There are more than 2,000 housekeeping service companies registered in the city, with nearly 600,000 domestic helpers on their books, said the company in its survey.
But this is still 200,000 too few ayi, and the situation is worse during the Spring Festival, as many are migrant workers and return to their home towns for the extended holiday.
The worst shortages lie with high-demand helpers — such as babysitters, home-stay housekeepers and carer staff for seniors.
The agency said 55 percent of Shanghai ayi are between 40 and 50 years old, with 21 percent between 30 and 40.
Under 30s account for 5.5 percent of the city ayi workforce.
Some 29 percent of ayi working in Shanghai attended senior high schools or higher educational institutions, according to Cloud Housekeeping.
