17 held for antique scam

POLICE have arrested 17 people, who cheated more than 100 people of 6 million yuan (US$913,806), Hongkou District prosecutors said yesterday.
The 25-member gang claimed to work for a local auction house Huasheng and an antique appraisal company Guyuan.
Prosecutors said the chief culprit was a man surnamed Fan. He rented a house in Hongkou District and registered a company called Huasheng in March last year, claiming to be dealing in antiques. He recruited people and asked them to do online promotion and look for potential buyers and sellers in antiques.
The modus operandi involved luring sellers with promises that there were clients for their antiques. They would then ask them to pay high appraisal fee of their items, which was done by Guyuan.
After cashing the money, they simply vanished.
