12 held in 1m yuan card shark raids
TWELVE alleged members of a card shark gang said to have cheated victims out of 1 million yuan (US$160,000) have been held by police in Songjiang District. Eight premises were raided and 400,000 yuan seized by officers.
Police said one suspect surnamed Pan lured gamblers into card rooms controlled by the ring. The gang let victims win at first but then cheated them. Victims were encouraged to write IOUs at high interest rates.
