THIS week will be mostly wet and chilly, forecasters said yesterday.
For most of the week the temperature will range between 5 and 11 degrees Celsius, though Friday will be colder, with a high of just 7 degrees.
Rain is expected on all days but Tuesday and drivers returning to the city are advised to take extra care on slippy roads.
The expected rains and northeasterly winds should help to improve the air quality in the city, which was officially described as heavily polluted yesterday afternoon.
The air quality index peaked at 213 at 5pm, while the concentration of PM2.5 particles reached 160 micrograms per cubic meter, six times the safe level set by the World Health Organization. By 9pm it had fallen to 152.
The poor air quality was due to pollution blown into the city from northern China, according to the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center. “Although there is no rain today, the air quality seems to be worse,” a member of the public said.
