Typhoon to bring cool, wet weekend

WHILE it is set to miss Shanghai, Typhoon Soudelor will bring cool winds and showers to the city over the weekend and rain and thunderstorms through next week, weather forecasters said yesterday.

This will bring an end to a heatwave that has seen temperatures of more than 35 degrees Celsius for the past 12 days.

But the high temperature will drop to 33 degrees today, under the influence of the typhoon, said the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

Temperatures will range between 27 to 32 degrees over a showery weekend, with the high down to 31 degrees on Monday.

Showers and thunderstorms will linger over the city for six days, according to the bureau.

The center of Soudelor, this year’s 13th typhoon, packing maximum wind gusts of up to 209 kilometers per hour, was 790 kilometers southeast of Hualien county on Taiwan at 5:30pm local time, according to the National Meteorological Center.

Moving northwest at a speed of 20 to 25km per hour with strengthening force, it was due to make landfall on the eastern coast of Taiwan overnight or this morning.

After crossing Taiwan, it will hit the coast of Fujian Province, the center said.
