Trial run soon for Yan’an Road bus lanes
THE city’s “medium-capacity traffic project” — two 17.5-kilometer bus-only lanes under the Yan’an Elevated Road — is set to go on a trial run after the Spring Festival.
Shanghai Transportation Commission made the announcement yesterday.
The lanes, in the middle of the road, have been painted red and drivers are not allowed to turn left or right.
But this has confused some drivers, causing congestion in the past few days.
A police officer on duty by where the elevated road runs by People’s Square said that drivers who were trying to turn off the bus lane were receiving warnings, but were not being fined.
Chai Jingwen, an official in charge of road administration at Shanghai traffic police, said the bus stations along the route were being furnished, and police were now testing signals for the bus lanes, which operated differently to other lanes.
“The whole bus route is expected to start running in February,” he added. Until then any motor vehicle can use any lanes.
“We will make adjustments later as we will keep assessing the impact of the project to traffic in other lanes,” said Feng Jianli, vice director of Shanghai Transportation Commission.
According to current traffic rules, bus-only lanes can be used by legal school buses and passenger buses capable of carrying more than 20 people. The lanes are open to all vehicles all day long on weekends and national holidays.
Construction of the trunk road in the project, which connects Huangpu, Jing’an, Minhang and Changning districts in Puxi through the heart of Shanghai in the east-west direction, started last June.
It is estimated that the buses, available every three to five minutes, will run at a speed of 18-19 kilometers per hour, twice as fast as other city buses.
