City travel agents say tourism to Malaysia drops sharply in peak season

TRAVEL agencies in Shanghai said today they are witnessing a sharp decrease in tourists to Malaysia and some travelers have even canceled tours that already were booked to the country.

About 20 percent of tourists who had booked tours to Malaysia that were scheduled to depart on April 4 and 18 at the Shanghai China CYTS Outbound Travel Service have cancelled their trips, the travel agency said.

CYTS announced today it has stopped using Malaysia Airlines for all tours and tourists who booked tours using the airline’s flights can get a refund or choose other airlines at the travel agency.

It issued a statement saying the decision was made out of safety concerns.

Shanghai Datong Travel Agency said it received very few tourists booking tours to Malaysia after Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370's disappearance.

March is a peak travel season to Southeast Asian countries including Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore, and the incident has led to a slump of tourists booking tour packages that include Malaysia, it said.

It said it would mainly choose domestic airlines in routes to Malaysia.

Some Chinese netizens have called for a boycott of Malaysian tours before an explanation over the incident is given.
