Sunny start to week but smog will return

SHANGHAI will enjoy a clean and sunny start to the week but the smog will be back on Wednesday.

It will be bright day today but with a slight drop in temperature, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said yesterday. The high is forecast to be 9 degrees Celsius and the low 5. It will be mostly cloudy from Tuesday to Thursday, with the high falling between 9 and 11 and the low hovering between 4 and 5.

After braving heavy pollution for almost a week, there will be some respite at the start of the week.

A strong easterly winds helped to clear the pollutants yesterday afternoon with the Air Quality Index dropping sharply from 182, or moderately polluted, at 11am to 79, or good, within two hours.

The AQI is forecast to be between 40 and 65 today with tiny particle PM10 being the major pollutant.

However, smog might appear on Wednesday. According to the meteorological bureau, lack of wind in the latter part of the week would create conditions for the accumulation of pollutants.

According to Yangtze River Delta’s air quality monitoring center, the northern and central part, where Shanghai is located, will suffer from moderate to heavy pollution on Wednesday and Thursday with the deadly PM2.5 the major pollutant.
