Speed limits at local expressways due to heavy fog

HEAVY fog this morning slowed down traffic in and out of the city as a few major expressways adopted temporary measures to prevent road accidents.

Four kilometers of congestion was formed at the exit to Jiangsu Province at the Anting toll station on G2 Beijing-Shanghai Expressway because the entire Jiangsu part of the expressway was shut down due to heavy fog as of 10am, according to the Shanghai Road Administration Bureau.

The Zhejiang part of G60 Shanghai-Kunming Expressway and the Jiangsu part of G15 Shenyang-Haikou Expressway, which were shut down as of 9am, were reopened to traffic at 10am, while traffic speed at all the other expressways linking Shanghai and other cities was limited to 60 to 80 kilometers per hour, according to the bureau.

The fog has been gradually dispersing during the day.

A large number of people are expected to return to the city today, the fifth day of the Chinese New Year, and tomorrow, which are the last two days of the Spring Festival holiday for most Chinese.
