Scorching today and tomorrow

YESTERDAY was the hottest day of the year, a scorching 35.4 degrees Celsius at the Xujiahui weather station, according to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

The bureau issued this year’s first yellow heat-wave alert at 2:05pm yesterday. Most of the city’s northwestern areas saw the mercury rise to 35 degrees and Songjiang District recorded the highest temperature — 35.6 degrees.

The weather bureau released another two yellow alerts for lightning and gales at 5:27pm yesterday, predicting evening thundershowers.

Due to a subtropical high, residents can expect little or no respite from the heat today and tomorrow. But the temperature is forecast to drop on Thursday and rain is expected on the weekend.

Tropical Storm Nepartak was 2,390 kilometers southeast of Taiwan at 5pm yesterday and is likely to continue moving northwest toward Taiwan and China’s east coast at a speed of 28 kilometers per hour.

It is continuing to strengthen and could soon become a typhoon or even a super typhoon. According to the China Meteorological Administration, Nepartak is expected to land at or pass Taiwan on Thursday night and then approach the coastal areas of Fujian and Zhejiang provinces. It may make landfall there on Friday or turn north offshore.

The bureau said if it hits neghboring Fujian or Zhejiang, it will mean heavy rains and gales for Shanghai.
