Riding Segways banned on city subway

MOTORIZED personal transporters, such as the two-wheeled Segways and electric unicycles, cannot be used in the city’s subway system, Metro police said yesterday.

These were not included in a list of banned items on the Metro issued earlier this year.

Police said the transporters cannot be used in Metro stations due to safety concerns.

Anyone caught using these powered personal transporters will be warned by Metro staff or police, but no further punishment will be given.

Segways and unicycles are already banned from Shanghai’s roads by traffic police.

Under Shanghai’s Metro regulations, bicycles and other forms of personal transport are not allowed on the subway system.

“Bicycles take up too much space in Metro carriages which can lead to disputes between passengers,” a Metro staff member at Line 3’s Dongbaoxing Road Station told Shanghai Daily.

Exceptions are made for foldaway bicycles, provided they adhere to regulations that limiting luggage to 1.7 meters in length and 0.2 cubic meters in volume, said the staff member.

“If a foldable cycle is put in a case and doesn’t take too much space, we allow them in,” the member of staff said.

According to the regulations, Metro passengers are also not allowed to use skateboards or roller skates in Metro stations, due to safety risks to others.

However, like other Metro bans on eating and drinking, these rely heavily on passengers adhering to the rules of their own accord.
