Reservoirs cleared

SHANGHAI’S two major tap water sources, the Qingcaosha and Chenhang reservoirs, have been cleared to take water from the Yangtze River after an oil leak due to a collision of ships last week, the Shanghai Water Authority said yesterday.
The authority has inspected the water quality around the reservoirs and confirmed with the maritime authorities in the upstream Changshu and Taicang cities in neighboring Jiangsu Province that the contamination has been fully cleaned up. Both reservoirs have begun taking in water again.
The tap water supplies were not affected during the accident. Two cargo ships collided with each other on Wednesday on the river section near Changshu. One of the ships sank immediately but no one was injured.
The dams of both reservoirs which were over 35 kilometers away were closed shortly after the collision to ensure the city’s tap water quality. The Qingcaosha Reservoir contains enough water to supply the city for 68 days, while the Chenhang Reservoir can supply for 10 days.
