Recreational vehicles get ready to roll

SHANGHAI residents will soon be able to rent recreational vehicles for days out and short holidays.

The RVs are available from Shanghai Jiaoyun Bashi Group, whose vehicles were recently granted Shanghai C license plates, which means they can be driven in the city, but only on roads outside the outer ring.

The fleet of five RVs is the first to be awarded such plates, as they were previously given only to privately owned vehicles.

The company said it will launch its rental service on May 8. Each of its vehicles sleeps six people, is fitted with a shower, satellite dish and fridge, and costs 1,300 yuan (US$210) per day.

Spokesman Jia Yan said the company plans to expand the fleet to 50 vehicles by the end of the year.

Prior to leaving the company’s forecourt, customers are given a brief lesson in how to drive the vehicles, Jia said.

In the event of an RV experiencing a mechanical problem, customers can get help from any of the company’s “aid stations” dotted around the region, he said.
