Quarantine protection

WORKERS who have been placed under quarantine due to suspected exposure to pathogens are now entitled to receive full pay from their employer during their absence, officials said yesterday.

The new labor regulation, which replaces one implemented in 2003, comes into effect on August 1. It also stipulates that new staff on probation must be paid at least 80 percent of the lowest salary paid to workers doing the same job.

Under the new regulation, employers who are late paying staff will be hit hard financially. They are now required to pay a penalty of between 50 and 100 percent of the amount owed, up from just 25 percent previously.
