Prepare for big delays at Pudong, Hongqiao Wednesday for control systems upgrade

UP to half of all flights into and out of Hongqiao and Pudong airports are likely to be delayed tomorrow as the facilities upgrade their control systems.

A press officer from the Air Traffic Management Bureau of the Civil Aviation Administration of China said the airports’ communication and radar systems will be upgraded to “enhance efficiency of takeoffs and landings” in the future.

Tomorrow it will mean delays for tens of thousands of passengers, though no details were provided.

Local carrier Spring Airlines said it had been told that capacity at the two airports will be cut by half.

The controller asked the airlines to prepare for the delays, it said.

The on-time rate of flights at the two airports fell for the fourth year in a row last year to about 68 percent, the Civil Aviation Administration of China said yesterday.

Airlines are to blame for 40 percent of flight delays, far more than are attributed to air traffic control issues of bad weather, it said.
