Pollution to ease on windy Wednesday

THE strong winds forecast for today should help to clear the air after pollution shrouded the city yesterday, the weather bureau said.
The air quality index soared to 201 at 11am yesterday, with the concentration of main pollutant PM2.5 particles peaking at 150 micrograms per cubic meter, exactly double the national “safe” level of 75.
By dusk, the index had fallen to about 120, with a PM2.5 density of less than 100 micrograms per cubic meter.
Yesterday’s hot weather — the high topped 25 degrees Celsius in some areas — added to the air quality problem, though that should be less of a problem today, the bureau said.
A bank of cool air will mean today’s high is unlikely to rise above 23 degrees, while the sky will be a mix of cloud and sun.
Tomorrow will be brighter, with the temperature about the same as today, while the highs for Friday and the weekend will be between 24 and 25 degrees.
