Miserable conditions set to stay
SHANGHAI will continue to be wet and cold today, though the recent rain and sleet should disappear overnight, forecasters said yesterday.
Temperatures are set to range between 3 and 10 degrees Celsius over the weekend, Fu Yi, chief forecaster at the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau, told Shanghai Daily.
Tomorrow and Monday will be cloudy and dry, though the rain will return on Tuesday, he said.
The city was hit by rain and sleet yesterday as elementary and middle schoolchildren returned for the new semester. The mercury fell to a low of just 3 degrees in some areas, Fu said.
“The sleet was caused by the meeting of separate cold and warm fronts,” he said.
In response to the slippy conditions, police dispatched more than 1,000 officers and assistants to roads close to schools to ensure young pupils made a safe return to school after their winter break.
