Metro to stay open till midnight on New Year's Eve

NEW Year’s Eve revelers in Shanghai will not have to make the long trek back home this year after the Metro operators yesterday decided to run Lines 1, 2 and 8 well past midnight.
The three busiest lines in the city will be in service for extra 80 minutes on December 31 to ferry revelers home.
Trains in both directions will ply every 10 minutes during the extended hours. Commuters can make transfers at the People’s Square Station.
However, the eastern section of Line 2 between Guanglan Road Station and Pudong International Airport will only run during the normal service hours.
The last trains on Line 1 will leave the two terminal stations — Fujin Road and Xinzhuang — at 11:50pm and 11:52pm, respectively, on December 31.
On Line 2, the last trains from Xujingdong and Guanglan Road stations are both scheduled for 12:05am.
Trains from Shendu Highway and Shiguang Road stations on Line 8 will leave at 11:50pm.
This year, Shanghai has cut down on large-scale New Year celebrations — the only big one being at Xintiandi, which will be limited to 4,800 participants.
But there are no restrictions on downtown shopping centers which usually stay open till very late in the night.
Some temples and scenic spots also attract late night visitors.
Shopping centers like the No. 1 Yaohan Department Store in Pudong, and the Shanghai New World Department Store on Nanjing Road E. will hold overnight promotional activities.
The Longhua Temple in Xuhui District will organize the annual bell ringing activity to welcome the New Year.
The Bund and Lujiazui also tends to attract revelers.
A total of 72 public buses that run close to some Metro stations will also extend their operational time on New Year’s Eve. Some of the bus numbers are 13, 21, 23, 37, 123, 139, 923, 934.
The taxi companies have also been told to encourage drivers to ply in the night, especially at major commercial centers around the city.
The traffic law enforcement team will be out in full force at airports, railway stations, as well as at transport hubs like the People’s Square and Xujiahui to crack down against illegal private cars looking for business, authorities said.
