Marathon registration not a race

REGISTRATION for the 2015 Shanghai International Marathon opens on Saturday.

Runners have until next Thursday — September 17 — to register for one of the 35,000 places in four categories in the 20th anniversary event on November 8.

However, while in previous years places were given on a first come, first served basis, this year they will be allocated by a lucky draw once registration closes, said organizers.

The Shanghai East Best Lansheng Event Management Company said this is to make the system fairer.

Applicants had previously complained that those with fast Internet connections had an advantage, said Lansheng.

There are 15,000 places available for the 42.2-kilometer marathon — 7,000 more than last year, and 8,000 places for the 21km half marathon — 2,000 less than last year.

Organizers said yesterday that this reflects the growing popularity of the full marathon and that the Shanghai International Half Marathon was launched in May.

There are 7,000 places for the 10k race and 5,000 for the 5k mini marathon.

Races start at 7am at Financial Square on Bund, and the full and half marathons finish at Shanghai Stadium in Xuhui District.

Runners can register from September 12 to 17 at the official website www.shang-ma.com — available in Chinese and English — or through Apple and Android race apps.

Places will be allocated by lottery and the results announced on September 21.

The entry fee for the marathon and half marathon is 100 yuan (US$15.7) for Chinese competitors and 300 yuan for foreign runners.

For shorter races, it is 60 yuan for Chinese and 200 yuan for foreign runners.

Last year, the event attracted 6,012 foreign runners — 17% of all competitors.
