Major traffic project set to begin

THE city’s “medium-capacity traffic project,” a 17.5-kilometer stretch of trunk road connecting Huangpu, Jing’an, Minhang and Changning districts, will begin by the end of this month, the city’s transport commission said yesterday.

Construction work will start at the west end of Huqingping Highway and Shenkun Road, and then extend eastward on Yan’an Road to the Bund area. By the beginning of August, construction work will begin on nearly 50 sites, the city’s television station said.

According to the current plan, 18-meter-long electric buses, which can carry up to 150 people, will transport passengers along the route.

Preparation work has begun on a new parking lot on Shenkun Road that will cover an area of 35,800 square meters, enough room for 52 18-meter buses and 32 12-meter buses, and provide maintenance and electricity charging services.

Unlike traditional buses that have doors that open on the right side, buses running along the route will have doors opening on the left side. To accommodate this, the stations will be set up in the middle of the road.

“The advantage is that the buses can run faster on bus-only lanes,” Xie Feng, head of the authority, said on a radio phone-in program earlier.

“We can avoid problems like right-sided bus-only lanes, which are often affected by ordinary vehicles waiting to turn.”

Commuters will be able to travel across four districts in one hour, according to the commission.
