Hundreds of drivers get text warnings

A new instant messaging system informing drivers of their traffic offenses right away has sent 647 text messages since it began operating on Monday, police said yesterday.

The suspected offenses were recorded by 600 special traffic police cameras around the city.

A man surnamed Wang who illegally used the bus-only lane at the intersection of Shangnan Road and Shangbo Road in Pudong on Monday evening and again yesterday morning confirmed that he received messages on time but said he didn’t notice them until the police phoned him to arrange an interview yesterday.

“I think it’s a good service because it makes me aware of my driving habits,” he said.

Another man whose car was registered under the name of a company was caught illegally changing lanes on Monday.

He told police that he received the message but wasn’t driving the car when the offense occurred.

“I’ll be sure to tell the person I lent the car to not to make the same mistake again,” he told police.

Police yesterday said that 212 messages were sent to drivers who illegally changed lanes; 194 were sent to those who illegally used elevated roads; 172 warned about using bus-only lanes; and 65 warned about speeding.

Police said 549 of the messages were sent to drivers with Shanghai plates.
