Heavy rain, strong winds forecast for city

HEAVY downpour, accompanied by strong gale, will hit the city tomorrow as Typhoon Nepartak lands in southeastern China, the city’s meteorological bureau said yesterday.

The downpour will stay until Tuesday and office-goers are being warned to brace for the wet, windy weather.

The super typhoon hit Taiwan at 5:50am yesterday with a maximum speed of 55 meters per second. It is expected to make a landing at Fujian Province early today. Though the typhoon will weaken into a tropical depression as it moves further on Saturday and Sunday, the city is expected to receive heavy rains from tomorrow. The wind force will reach level 6 and 7, with some coastal areas recording wind levels as high as 9.

Also, the average water level at Taihu Lake reached 4.85 meters yesterday morning, which was 0.2 meters higher than the alert level, the city’s flood prevention authority said. The lake is on the upstream of the Huangpu River and Suzhou Creek.

Local residents meanwhile enjoyed a sunny and relatively pleasant afternoon yesterday with marshmallow-shaped clouds hovering in the sky.

“This is because of the clean wind from the sea,” Fu Yi, a chief service officer at the bureau, told Shanghai Daily. “The clouds are also produced due to the convection current.”

Shanghai Road Administration Bureau said yesterday that it had checked the city’s road and drainage infrastructure ahead of the expected deluge.

Officials have been told to keep a check on the 563 underpasses around the city which are susceptible to flooding in heavy rainfall. The bureau said it will shut them down if the accumulated water level reaches 25 centimeters.

Shanghai Railway Police said they had already beefed up their force at the railway terminals to maintain order and crack down on illegal activities. The Metro operator said it had carried out checks along the tracks and at stations to ensure smooth operation.

The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said it will be cloudy today with chances of brief showers. The mercury will be between 26 to 31 degrees Celsius. However, the high will decline to 29 degrees tomorrow and on Monday, but climb to 32 degrees again on Tuesday.
