City issues 3rd red alert as mercury to stay above 40 today

SHANGHAI issued this summer’s third red alert for heat wave this morning.

The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued the red alert – the highest in the three-level system, at 8:10am, warning that the temperature today is likely to top 40 degrees Celsius again.

Just yesterday, the mercury reached 40.3 degrees Celsius, making it the hottest day this year and the third-hottest since the city began keeping records in 1873.
