City airports to ban smoking inside terminal buildings starting Sunday
SHANGHAI’S two airports will ban smoking inside terminal buildings from this Sunday with all the indoor smoking rooms to be closed, the airport authority said today.
The authority has set up new outdoor smoking areas outside the terminal buildings at the Pudong and Hongqiao international airports, and airport authority will guide the smokers to the designated areas.
“The new ban is accord with the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control as well as the city’s new smoking control regulation,” an official with the airport authority said.
The city’s legislative body is evaluating stricter rules which will extend smoking ban to all indoor public venues, including hotels, restaurants, offices, airports and public transport. The new rules will be further evaluated and revised but are expected to come into force by the end of this year.
Two outdoor smoking areas are set up at Pudong airport’s T1 terminal, and three have been set for the T2 terminal at the airport. Hongqiao airport has two outdoor smoking areas at both terminal buildings.
These new outdoor smoking areas are located at the remote bays waiting areas for both domestic and international flights at both airports.
The city’s railway stations have also carried out the indoor smoking ban and shut down all the indoor smoking rooms.
