Bus company checks out latest safety technology

IMPROVING bus safety was the focus of a presentation yesterday morning at the Pudong Public Transportation Company’s headquarters.

One of the new safety technologies being considered for implementation by the company enables bus drivers to shatter their vehicle’s windows simply by pushing a button, allowing passengers to rapidly evacuate in the event of emergencies.

The system, if is introduced after testing, will replace the escape hammers that are currently provided for that purpose, bus company officials said.

“The device is not just for fires. It also allows passengers to escape when their bus lands in water or the power supply fails,” said Zhang Youjun, a representative of the supplier, adding that the technology can shatter multiple windows simultaneously using an independent power supply.

“Many people know how to use the escape hammers in normal situations, but when emergencies happen, people tend to panic and have no idea what to do,” Zhang added.

In the event of an emergency in which the driver is unable to activate the system, there are auxiliary buttons in the carriage so “the passengers can also hit the button if the driver is panicking or incapable of turning it on.”

Zhang revealed that the technology has been introduced in southwest China’s Chongqing City and northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

Another vehicle safety device that can detect banned substances on buses, including alcohol and gasoline, was also examined.

The bus company, the largest in the Pudong New Area, will decide whether to adopt the new systems after they have been tested by experts.
