Blueprint for revitalizing public areas along the Huangpu River

A revitalized 8.3-kilometer-long public area along the Huangpu River bank that connects the Bund, the South Bund and the former World Expo park in the Puxi area will be completed by the middle of next year, the Huangpu District government announced yesterday.

The former Expo park in Puxi between the Nanpu and Lupu bridges will feature cycling tracks and pedestrian paths. A grass music square will be constructed, and a former shipyard will be converted into a sports area for children.

A beach sports area will be created where a dock once stood, and a former pier will become an urban fashion space with a yachting culture theme.

A landscaped park facing the Huangpu River in the South Bund will connect the river banks between the south and north with a pedestrian corridor. Three ferry stations in the Binjiang area — the Dongmen Road-Fuxing Road East ferry station, the Dongjiadu ferry station and Lujiabang Road ferry station — will be upgraded. A water bus pier is to be established at the Dongjiadu ferry station.

Public space under the Nanpu Bridge will be turned into the Miaojiang Road public green area, and a wooden path will link it with an area by the Lupu Bridge.

A pedestrian bridge will be built to connect land in the Rihui Port area.

The Binjiang area in Puxi will incorporate facilities for walking, jogging and cycling, and visitors will be able to take sightseeing buses or boats to the Huangpu River bank, according to the blueprint.

Public service areas, catering venues, convenience stores, toilets and tourist service centers will be set up in key areas, and there will be four culture-themed routes for tourists linking the Bund Origin, Yuyuan Garden, City God Temple, Dongjiadu Park and city’s historic Shikumen (stone gate) lanes in the district.

The difficulty lies in how to get through so-called three breakpoints in the area.

“These breakpoints were formed because of historical reasons as some buildings occupied and blocked the passage in the Binjiang area in the past,” said Ge Jun, executive deputy director of the office on the comprehensive development of the Huangpu Binjiang area.

One of them in the Rihui Port area situated at the junction of Huangpu and Xuhui districts. Work on the Rihui Port Bridge to remove the breakpoint is expected to be completed soon, officials said.

Because one end of the bridge is in the Xuhui Binjiang area, people will be able to walk from the Bund to Xuhui Binjiang after the bridge is finished.
