Blanket of pollution under sunny skies
THE smog blanketing the city yesterday is likely to persist and possibly worsen today under sunny skies, say forecasters.
The Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau issued a blue air pollution alert at 5pm yesterday, advising children, the elderly and people with heart or respiratory problems to stay inside. By 8pm, the city’s AQI had climbed to 227 and the PM2.5 concentration reached 177 micrograms per cubic meter.
The air-quality index exceeded 100 from 5am yesterday, with the AQI reaching 208 and the concentration of PM2.5 particles approaching 160 micrograms per cubic meter, six times the World Health Organisation’s safe limit of 25, by noon.
The two readings later dipped to a moderate level by 3pm, but bounced back to 217 and 167 micrograms per cubic meter by 5pm, reaching the blue alert level a few hours later.
Heavy pollution cannot be ruled out during the upcoming Spring Festival holiday, said the bureau. But on Sunday and Monday, Chinese New Year’s Eve and New Year's Day, westerly winds are expected to bring “good” or “lightly polluted” conditions.
Thanks to a strong southeasterly wind bringing clean air in from the sea, the city should enjoy “good” or “perfect” air quality from Tuesday to Friday. Rain on Thursday and Friday is expected to help reduce pollution.
The bureau stressed that fireworks set off to welcome the Year of the Monkey and the God of Fortune, which falls on February 8 and February 12 this year, respectively, will likely have a temporary effect on air quality.
