Baoshan to install Beidou on manhole covers

BAOSHAN District will install China's Beidou navigation satellite system on 12,000 manhole covers to prevent thefts, officials said today.

The system will trigger an alarm once a cover is moved. Police or government officials can then rush to the scene immediately.

The real-time monitoring system will also be used to avoid open manhole covers across the district. This means fewer people will fall into open manholes, said Chen Dawu, an official who takes charge of the installation.

"The city's manholes belong to different government bodies and the satellite can help identify who should take charge when there is a problem," Chen said.

Shanghai has about 6.5 million manholes. Nineteen agencies, including the water, telecommunications and electricity authorities, are responsible for them, according to the Shanghai Construction Commission.
